Professional Consultation
Collaborative Framing with the Artist
Z Art offers complimentary consultations where we work directly with artists, collectors, and clients to find the perfect way to present each and every piece. To us, framing is not just a finishing step, but an art form of its own.

Honoring the history and tradition of our trade, we strive to not only accentuate the art as the artist intended, but to make it unique to each set of hands it passes through. From marrying your home’s aesthetic to a historical piece, to giving your treasured collection that extra flair that really sets it apart, our aim is to honor your interpretation of the piece and space as a whole in harmonic tandem with the original vision.

Bringing our expertise in framing design, material selection, and installation, let us guide you to artistic displays that enhance the artwork without ever overshadowing it blending artistic vision and our master craftsmanship to create a final presentation that feels complete, balanced, and true to the work itself. The result is more than a frame around canvas, it is a fully realized work of art.

“Framing Designed in Collaboration with the Artist."
At our studio, framing is a collaborative process. We invite artists and clients to take part in our complimentary in-house consultations, where the creative process continues beyond the canvas. In our showroom, clients can explore frame styles, matting options, and various presentation arrangements while working directly with our experienced team.

Our atmosphere is designed to make both artists and newcomers feel comfortable, inspired, and fully involved in the process. We can’t wait to work with you and what you bring us!

-
Check if the piece will be in direct sunlight so we can make sure to give it a protective glass!

Ornate & Traditional Frames
Ornate frames are a celebration of artistry in their own right—where the frame is not just a border, but an extension of the artwork itself. Defined by their rich detail and classical influence, these frames often feature hand-finished carvings such as scrolling acanthus leaves, floral motifs, baroque flourishes, and layered moldings that create depth and movement.

The craftsmanship behind ornate frames is rooted in centuries-old techniques. Many are carved or cast from solid wood, then carefully shaped to reveal fine details that catch light and shadow from every angle. Artisans may apply gesso layers to build a smooth foundation before adding hand-applied finishes like gold or silver leaf, antique patinas, or distressed glazes. This multi-step process gives each frame a sense of age, texture, and character that cannot be replicated by mass production.

Because of their visual weight and sophistication, ornate frames are especially well-suited for oil paintings, classical portraits, and statement pieces that benefit from a sense of grandeur. They evoke the feeling of museum-quality presentation—timeless, dramatic, and deeply refined—making them a powerful choice for collectors and interiors that lean toward traditional or luxurious design.

A staple of modern design, these frames feature slim profiles and sharp, square edges. The goal is simplicity, allowing the artwork to take center stage. Thin black gallery frames or or natural wood tones bring warmth into a minimalist space without adding visual clutter. Matte finishes eliminate glare and add a soft, sophisticated touch. Also available in a variety of solid colors these frames complement contemporary artwork, photography, and abstract pieces without overpowering them.
Modern & Minimalist Frames
Matting & Layered Color Design
Matting is where framing becomes design. Through careful layering and color selection, we can highlight key tones within the artwork, add depth and dimension, and create a presentation that feels both balanced and intentional. Whether clean and minimal or rich with contrast, the right mat combination elevates the entire piece.

Single Mat (Clean & Classic)
A single mat provides a clean border around the artwork, offering breathing room and subtle emphasis. Neutral tones like white, cream, or soft gray are timeless choices that keep the focus on the piece while adding a polished, gallery-style presentation.

Double Mat (Depth & Contrast)
Double matting introduces a second layer beneath the top mat, revealing a thin border—often called a “reveal”—of a complementary or contrasting color. This layered effect adds depth, dimension, and sophistication, making the artwork feel more intentional and elevated.
The color combinations in double matting can dramatically influence the final presentation:
-
Neutral + Neutral (e.g., white over cream): Soft, elegant, and refined—ideal for traditional or subtle presentations.
-
Neutral + Accent Color (e.g., white over black, or cream over deep blue): Adds definition and draws out specific tones within the artwork.
-
Tone-on-Tone (e.g., light gray over charcoal): Creates a modern, understated depth with a cohesive feel.
-
Bold Contrast (e.g., white over red or gold): Makes a statement and adds energy—often used for dramatic or contemporary pieces.
Design Intent
The bottom mat (the reveal) is typically kept narrow—just enough to add a line of color that enhances the artwork without overpowering it. This detail may seem subtle, but it’s a hallmark of thoughtful, professional framing.

This style combines precision mounting with dimensional presentation to create the illusion that the artwork is “floating” within the frame. Instead of being recessed behind a mat, the artwork is carefully mounted to a rigid backing board and elevated slightly forward, giving it presence, depth, and a clean, contemporary edge.

The Elevated Effect
By raising the artwork off the backing, a subtle shadow line is created around the piece. This shadow adds depth and separation, making the artwork feel more sculptural and visually dynamic—similar to a canvas floater frame, but adaptable to prints, photographs, and works on paper.

Mounted & Raised
Floater-Style Framing
Mounting Techniques
The artwork is securely mounted to an archival board using conservation-safe methods. Depending on the piece, this may include hinging, dry mounting, or other preservation techniques that keep the artwork flat while protecting its integrity. The board itself becomes part of the presentation, acting as a clean, intentional backdrop.

Border & Reveal Options
This style often includes a visible border around the artwork, which can be:
-
Neutral (white, black, or natural tones) for a crisp, gallery look
-
Color-matched to subtly blend with the artwork
-
Contrasting to create a bold, graphic effect
The spacing around the artwork can also be adjusted—tight for a refined look or wider for a more dramatic, gallery-style presentation.

Frame Pairings
Mounted and raised artwork pairs beautifully with:
-
Thin modern frames for a minimalist aesthetic
-
Floating frames for a true gallery presentation
-
Deeper profile frames to emphasize the dimensional effect
Ideal Uses
This technique is perfect for photography, fine art prints, digital artwork, and pieces where you want a modern, elevated presentation without traditional matting. It’s especially popular in contemporary interiors, galleries, and commercial spaces.

Custom & Designer Frames
Custom and designer framing is where craftsmanship meets creativity, offering a fully tailored approach that transforms framing into a true extension of the artwork. Rather than selecting from standard options, every detail is intentionally chosen to complement the piece, its environment, and the client’s vision.

A Fully Personalized Approach
Custom framing begins with collaboration. From the frame profile and material to the finish, matting, and scale, each element is selected to enhance the artwork’s character. Whether the goal is subtle refinement or a bold statement, the design is built around the piece, not the other way around.

Materials & Finishes
Designer frames open the door to a wide range of materials and finishes beyond standard offerings. This can include hand-finished woods, specialty veneers, lacquered surfaces, metallic leafing, and custom stains or paints. Finishes can be layered, distressed, polished, or textured to achieve a specific look—whether that’s modern, rustic, industrial, or classically ornate.

Proportion & Scale
One of the defining features of custom framing is proportion. The width and depth of the frame, the size of the matting, and the overall scale are carefully considered to ensure balance. A large statement piece may call for a bold, substantial frame, while a smaller or more delicate work may benefit from a refined, minimal profile.
Integration with Interior Design
Custom frames are often designed with their final environment in mind. Whether the artwork is destined for a home, gallery, or hospitality space, the frame can be tailored to complement surrounding materials, colors, and architectural elements creating a cohesive, elevated presentation.

One-of-a-Kind Results
No two custom frames are exactly alike. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and built to suit the artwork and the client’s aesthetic, resulting in a presentation that feels unique, intentional, and highly refined. Custom and designer framing allows us to go beyond standard solutions and create something truly exceptional. By combining expert consultation with a wide range of materials, finishes, and design options, we craft frames that not only protect the artwork, but elevate it, turning every piece into a finished statement tailored to its space.

Shai and Judy are amazing! His staff is equally amazing! They are the best. If I could give them 10 stars I would. Actually I'm gonna give them 10 stars. Their kindness, professionalism, quality, and personal service is as good as you could possibly ask for. They went above and beyond for me. I had three pictures framed and I am beyond happy about the results. As soon as I hung them up, my friends immediately complimented me. Can't say this loud enough. "I've had the absolute best experience I've ever had getting some artwork framed." I am now a customer for life. Thank you so much Shai and Judy. You rock!

Cant say enough about this business. We framed few new pieces about 6 years ago, after that we reframed entire our collection with Shai. He has great eye to recommend you right choice, besides he offers great variety of materials starting from simple to high end, rare European, sophisticated materials. Very meticulous work on any piece. Priced everything very fair. Very safe, we left with him some valuable pieces - no any issue at all. The only downside is that sometimes it takes long, but considering the quality and safety, understandable. As a collector, very lucky to know this place.

I have worked with numerous framers as an artist but Shai at Z Art is absolutely the best hands down. I love to paint and create but hate the framing as it can make or break the painting. Shai has such a wonderful eye and he is incredibly patience. He gets it right every time. I drive all the way from Ventura since I moved two years ago... no one does it better than this group!
